Chapter Sixteen

Knox

The tires of my truck crunched on gravel as I turned off the road and skidded over a patch of black ice. I straightened the truck and drove up the driveway. The high beams illuminated the frame of my log cabin, sweeping over the front porch and reflecting off the windows.

A light coating of new snow whitened the gabled roof. The light by the front door had been left on, proof that my brother Ken and his husband Derek had prepared the cabin for our arrival. Since I hadn’t used the place for a while, I’d called ahead and asked them to air out the place and stock the refrigerator with Karma’s favorite foods.

Even though we ran the ranch as a partnership, Ken and Derek were listed as the legal owners of the business and the property. To protect my identity as a black ops specialist, my name was nowhere to be found on any of the ranch’s legal documents.

That’s how I liked it. That’s how Elite and Battle Brothers required it, too. It was also why the ranch was the best place for us to lay low.

I parked the car under the carport, turned off the ignition, and looked over at Karma. Curled on the reclined seat, she slumbered under a blanket, still in the deep, drug-induced sleep that had lasted the five hours our trip had taken, courtesy of Apollo’s prescriptions.

I had a bag full of those along with our luggage in the back seat, meds that would hopefully help Karma recover her health and confidence. I didn’t know which one would be harder for her, but I was ready to battle for both.

I opened the door, stepped out of the truck, and stretched out my weary bones and my cramped neck. The air was cold, crisp, and scented with the smell of the blue spruces that grew by the cabin. The trickle of the creek sang in the night. A tiny stream of water was still running through it, despite the winter temps.

I looked up at the sky and took a deep breath. The Milky Way dotted the sky with a million stars, some brighter than others.

It was good to be home.

I marched to the door, unlocked it, and returned to the truck. Karma was out. Good. Sleep was healing. I scooped her up in my arms, mounted the steps, and carried her through the front door, across the living room, and into the hallway that led to my bedroom. Propping the door open with my boot, I entered, settled her down on the mattress, and covered her with the blankets folded at the foot of the bed.

Looking down on her, my heart squeezed so hard it hurt. Karma was here, in my cabin, on my ranch. It was a vision I’d dreamed about but never dared wish for.

Sure, the circumstances could be better, but I was nothing if not an optimistic idiot—an optidiot, Karma liked to tease me. Perhaps one of these days she’d learn
